TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Freshman Rodolfo Cazaubon outplayed some of the top golfers in the nation with a 2-under par 69 to open play for North Texas at the Seminole Intercollegiate. Cazaubon is tied for second place, just three shots off the lead, after a round that featured five birdies. His round of 69 puts him three shots behind Jack Field of North Carolina who shot an opening round of 66.
The field of player's Cazaubon's round topped include the second ranked player in the nation in Florida State's Brooks Koepka. As a team the Mean Green is tied for sixth place Troy after the first round at the SouthWood Golf Course. North Texas is two shots ahead of 34th ranked Arkansas after the opening round.
Cazaubon's 69 powered the Mean Green to an opening round of 291. 11th ranked Florida State leads after day one with a 6-under par 278. North Texas is just two shots behind Mississippi State and only three strokes behind 43rd ranked Baylor and 9th ranked South Carolina.
The field features two teams in the top 15 in the nation and four in the top 50.
Freshman Carlos Ortiz had strong round of 1-over par 72 through 18 holes. Ortiz had four birdies on the day. Ortiz is tied for 22nd heading into the second round.
Senior Dustin Thompson is 2-over par after a first round of 73. Thompson had a stretch of four birdies in five holes on the back nine.
Ben Hargis is at 6-over par after a 77 in the first round while Peter Fallon struggled on the day with an opening round of 79.
