Lafayette, La. (Oakbourne C.C.) (3/12/02) - Three North Texas golfers improved their individual standings on the final day of action at the Louisiana Classic, but the Mean Green remained in ninth place after shooting a final-round 295 to finish the tournament.
North Texas, which was tied for ninth place with Missouri after the first two rounds, finished the tournament with a three-round score of 882. The Mean Green posted a 292 for the opening 18 holes and a 295 for the second and third rounds. All three North Texas totals were under the teams season average of 296.9 strokes per round.
The Mean Green finished ahead of six schools, including Missouri, Memphis, Southern Mississippi, UL-Lafayette, Arkansas and Rice. SMU captured the tournament title with a score of 864, while Tulsa and Baylor each shot an 873 to tie for second place and round out the top three finishers. Kansas and Texas Tech finished only one stroke ahead of North Texas in the final standings and just seven strokes separated the Mean Green and fourth-place UT-San Antonio.
Senior Michael Pruitt shot a 220 to finish in 18th place and lead the Mean Green. Pruitt’s 18th-place finish is his best this season and his first-round score of 69 was the lowest single-round score among all North Texas golfers.
Zach Atkinson, Freddy Espericueta and Brad Gibson all improved their standings in the final round. Atkinson, who was tied for 47th place, jumped to a tie for 23rd place, while Espericueta and Gibson were tied for 41st place and ended up tied for 34th and 40th place, respectively.
The Mean Green is back in action March 25-26 at the UTSA Intercollegiate. The tournament will be hosted by UT-San Antonio and played at Oak Hills Country Club.
