Ortiz Tied For First After 18 holes

DADE CITY, Fla. - A huge field of 21 teams awaited the No. 25 North Texas men's golf team at the opening round of the USF Invitational and led by sophomore Carlos Ortiz the Mean Green is alone in second place after the first 18 holes at 8-under par.

North Texas shot a 280 and is six shots off the pace set by Middle Tennessee who is the clubhouse leader at 274 after 18 holes. The Mean Green has a 13-stroke lead over No. 30 USF.

Ortiz is tied for the individual lead with three other players after an opening round of 5-under par 67.  Ortiz had a sizzling start to his round with a birdie on his second hole and eagle on the par-4 third hole. He ended with only one bogey, four birdies, and an eagle.

Ty Spinella was right behind Ortiz as he is one stroke off the lead at 4-under par. Spinella kept his hot play in the first round with charge on the back nine. Spinella had four birdies on the back nine and posted a 68 for the round.

Rodolfo Cazaubon shot an even-par round of 72 with a fairly clean scorecard. Cazaubon had one birdie and only one bogey to go along with 16 pars on the day. He is tied for 21st.

Josh Jones is one stroke behind after an opening round of 73. Jones was 3-under par after nine holes but struggled on the back nine at 4-over par.  Marco Scarola shot a 76 in his opening round despite posting four birdies on the day.

The second round of tournament begins tomorrow morning from the Lake Jovita Golf Club.
