SAN ANTONIO, Tex. (2/26/02) - The North Texas men’s golf team shot a three-round 896 at the UTSA Invitational to finish tied with the Univ. of Arkansas and Texas-San Antonio for second place among 16 teams.
The Mean Green shot a combined 582 for the first two rounds of action on Monday, leaving it in third place with one round remaining. North Texas shot a 296 for the first 18 holes, but came back to record its best score at the tournament with a second-round 286. Just like every other team at the tournament, North Texas’ final-round score jumped above 300 as it finished with a 314 for the final 18 holes.
Wichita State shot an 882 to win the tournament title. UNT’s second place finish is also its second best finish of the season. The Mean Green won the Cardinal Classic (October 22-23) earlier this season.
Zach Atkinson (So.; Irving, Tex.) shot a 218 and finished a career-best second place to lead North Texas. Also finishing in the top-25 individually for the Mean Green were Brad Gibson (So.; Andrews, Tex.) and Freddy Espericueta (Jr.; Edinburg, Tex.). Gibson shot a 224 and finished tied for 16th place, while Espericueta shot a 228 to tie for 22nd.
North Texas is back in action March 11-12 at the Louisiana Classic, hosted by UL Lafayette.
