Welch Leads North Texas After Windy Day On The Links

SPRING, Tex. (2/25/08) It was a wild and windy day for the North Texas men’s golf team as senior Austin Welch capped off the afternoon for the Mean Green with a 3-over par 147 and is tied for 8th place after the first day of the All-American Golf Classic.


The Mean Green as a team shot a two-round score of 607 and is in 11th place after the first day from the Traditions at Cypresswood.  


“The wind was pretty tough later in the day but we all had to play in those conditions and we just needed make a few more shots than we did,” said North Texas coach Jim Bob Jackson.


Welch, shot an opening round of 2-under par 70 and then was met by a fierce wind in the second round as he posted a 77. Anthony Broussard shot the same opening round score as Welch, 2-under par 70, but didn’t fare quite as well against the wind with a second round of 82. Dustin Thompson had the most consistent day as he shot a first round 76 and a second round of 77.


Harris Graham carded a 78 and a 76 to finish with a 154 for two rounds. Ben Smock is one shot behind at 155 after a 77 and 78 in his first two rounds.


The final round of the All-American Golf Classic is tomorrow at 8 a.m.
