Atkinson Claims Individual Championship At UTSA Invitational

SAN ANTONIO (2/24/03) -- Junior Zach Atkinson fired a one-over par 72 on Monday to claim the individual championship of the weather-hampered UT-San Antonio Invitational and lead the North Texas men's golf team to a tie for third place.

Cold, icy weather conditions at the Oak Hills Country Club forced the cancellation of the tournament's final two rounds. Before the competition was called, Atkinson recorded a 35-37--72 to win the individual title by one stroke over Texas Tech's Andrew Dresser, Kansas State's Aaron Watkins and Louisiana-Lafayette's Tobias Winberg.

The Mean Green, meanwhile, finished five strokes behind the Red Raiders in the team championship race. Texas Tech won with a 300, followed by Arkansas at 302 and North Texas and Kansas State in a two-way tie for third at 305.

North Texas had one other top 15 finisher in junior Thomas Kulcak, who ended in a tie for 13th with a score of 38-38--76.
