GUADALAJARA, Mexico The North Texas men’s golf team shot a third-round team score of 301 Monday to finish in sixth place at the GADO North Texas Classic. The Mean Green finished the tournament with a three-round score of 912 which was 16 shots off tournament winners Houston and Indiana which tied with a total team score of 896.
“It was a good tournament to begin the season,” head coach Jim Bob Jackson said. “We played better as a team on Monday with all five guys shooting in the 70’s. We have a long way to go, but I’m encouraged by the way we battled back after struggling in the first round.
North Texas was led by junior Anthony Broussard who shot a two-over par 74 on Monday finishing in fourth place overall with a three-round score of 221. Broussard shot 76, 71 and 74 in his three rounds. Jorge Campillo of Indiana and Jordan Irwin of Houston were co-medalists with a total score of 214. Campillo had the tournament’s low round when he shot a 68 on Sunday. Aaron Hobbs of Cal State Northridge was the only other individual in the tournament to score better than Broussard with a 219.
Junior Austin Welch finished in 17th overall for North Texas with a three-round score of 227. Welch shot a 75 on Monday, following rounds of 81 and 71 on Sunday. Broussard and Welch both tied with North Texas’ low round of the tournament when they each shot a 1-under par 71 in the second round.
Mean Green freshman Dustin Thompson finished tied for 28th with a three-round score of 232. Raul Lemus (239) and Harris Graham (240) rounded out the North Texas scoring. Lemus and Graham both had their best rounds of the tournament on Monday, shooting 78 and 76 respectively.
This was the second-annual North Texas Classic held in Guadalajara. Houston also won the tournament in 2006. The 10-team tournament was played at the El Palomar Country Club which is a 6,900-yard, par-72 course.
