KATY, Tex. (2/12/02) - The North Texas men’s golf team jumped two places in the final round of action at the Rice Intercollegiate on Tuesday, finishing tied for seventh place with a three-round score of 895 (303-305-287).
After shooting a 303 and 305 for the first two rounds, respectively, the Mean Green came back to register its second lowest single-round score of the season with a 287 for the final 18 holes. The University of Tennessee shot an 862 to claim the tournament title. Baylor finished second with an 875 and Southwest Texas State posted an 889 to take home third place.
Weston Bingham (So.; Victoria, Tex.) and Thomas Kulcak (So.; Needville, Tex.) both shot a 222 and finished tied for 13th place to lead North Texas. Bingham shot a final round 68, which was the lowest single-round score by any North Texas golfer at the tournament and just one stroke over the best single-round score by a North Texas golfer for the entire season. Playing in his first tournament of the season and entering the final round of action tied for seventh place, Kulcak dropped six places in the final standings despite posting his best single-round score on the final day with a 73.
All but one North Texas golfer posted their best single-round score of the tournament on the final 18 holes and all five at least equaled their best score for any 18 holes at the outing.
The tournament marked the first Spring contest of the year for North Texas, which next competes at the UTSA Intercollegiate Feb. 25-26.
