DENTON, Texas - The North Texas men's golf team didn't start the season with a target on their backs, but they will begin the spring season with one. Coming off a successful fall season, the Mean Green is ranked No. 28 in the nation as they start the spring year off Saturday at the La Cantera Individual Classic.
North Texas will play against Oklahoma and Kansas State in a field where there will only be an individual champion. The one-day event is a warm-up for North Texas as they open tournament play at the Oak Hills Invitational on Monday.
The Mean Green played in three fall tournament's, finishing first, second, and third. North Texas opened the year out with a dominating performance at the UTA/Waterchase Invitational winning by 20 strokes.
North Texas had three individual titles as Curtis Donahoe won the Waterchase Invitational and Carlos Ortiz captured a share of the William H. Tucker Invitational and won the Lone Star Invitational outright to close out the fall season.
The Mean Green will face some of the nation's top teams to start the year as in San Antonio will be No. Texas Teach, No. 44 Baylor, No. 45 Tulsa, and No. 50 SE Louisiana. The Mean Green is ranked No. 28 by Golfstat and No. 29 by Golfweek.
