Broussard Tied For The Lead After The First Round Of Play

HOUSTON, Tex. (2/7/05) North Texas freshman golfer Anthony Broussard shot an opening round of 71 and is tied for first place after the first round of play at the Rice Invitational from the Wildcat Country Club.

 

Broussard is tied for the lead after firing a one-under round in a rain shortened first day that saw the second round of play cancelled.

 

Broussard paced North Texas as a team as the Mean Green is in third place, just five shots behind the leader Sam Houston State.

 

“We played pretty well considering the conditions out there today,” said North Texas head coach Jim Bob Jackson. “Of course I would like to in a little bit better position but we have ourselves in contention and setup to make a run at the title”.

 

Freshman Austin Welch is also in the top five for North Texas after an opening round of 1-over par 73.

 

Junior Andreas Kali-Nilsson shot a 76 while Raul Lemus fired an opening round of 79.

 

Through 18 holes of play North Texas sits at 299, while Sam Houston State is five shots ahead at 294. Nebraska is one shot behind the Bearkats with an opening round of 295.

 

The final round of play will tomorrow with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
