North Texas Grabs The Lead After Two Rounds Of Play
Mean Green Leading By Eight Shots At The Bayou City Classic
PEARLAND, Tex. – The North Texas men’s golf team roared to the top of the leaderboard as they hold a commanding eight stroke lead after the first two rounds of play at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic.
Four of the five Mean Green golfers sit in the top-16, led by sophomore Michael Cotton who is tied for second place after 36 holes.
North Texas shot a second-round of 1-under par as a team, to go along with the 1-over par in the first round, giving them an ever-par score of 576, eight shots ahead of Lamar and 14 strokes in front of Kansas going into the final round.
Cotton was red-hot to begin the day as he shot a career-low round of 5-under par 67 in the first round. Cotton closed the round with three straight birdies to take the first round lead. He slipped back just a bit in the second round with a 1-over par 73, but still had three birdies in the round and 10 on the day.
Cotton is only two strokes off the lead heading into the final round as he is 4-under par for the tournament.
Freshman Ian Snyman is alone in 11th place at 1-over for the tournament. Snyman opened with a 75 but bounced back to post red figures with a 2-under 70 in the second round. Snyman had four birdies in the second round.
Cory Churchman is just one stroke behind at 2-over par for the tournament after rounds of 73. Churchman is tied for 12th place. Nick Rodriguez is tied for 16th place at 3-over par after shooting a 76 in the first round, but a 1-under par 71 in the second round. Thomas Rosenmueller is tied for 31st place as he shot a 74 and 76 on the day.
The Mean Green is looking for another tournament title under head coach Brad Stracke, which would be the sixth straight year NT has brought home a championship.
