BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The North Texas men’s golf team turned in one of its best rounds of the year in the final day of the Graeme McDowell Shoal Creek Invitational. The Mean Green shot a 2-over par 290, which was the third-best round of the day, while Gonzalo Rubio notched his first career top-10 finish.
North Texas as a team moved up to eighth place for the tournament while Rubio finished tied for sixth place. Rubio posted his second straight round of 2-under par 70 and finished at 4-under par for the tournament. Rubio posted four birdies for the second straight round with only two bogeys. It is the best finish of Rubio’s career and the best for a North Texas player in the fall season.
Julien Marot ended tied for 34th place after a 2-over par 74 in the third-round. Cory Churchman and Nick Rodriguez each had their best rounds with a 1-over par 73. Rodriguez was 4-over par after the first nine holes but carded five birdies to play the second nine at 3-over par.
Churchman finished in a tie for 41st place while Rodriguez was tied for 44th place. Juan Munoz ended with a third-round of 78 to finish in 55th place.
Memphis captured the overall team title with a final round of 12-under par to overtake UAB.
North Texas is back in action on October 21-22 at the Jim River Intercollegiate.
