BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomore Gonzalo Rubio posted a career-low round, as did freshman Julien Marot to pace the North Texas men’s golf team at the opening day of the Graeme McDowell Shoal Creek Invitational.
Rubio shot a 2-under par 70 in the second round that featured four birdies after a roller coaster opening round of even-par 72. Rubio’s opening round had six birdies, six bogeys and six pars. He is tied for 10th place after 36 holes.
Marot opened the tournament with a career-best score of 2-under par 70. His round was made more impressive after starting at 3-over par through six holes. He then reeled off five birdies on the final 12 holes. He fell off the pace just a bit in the second round with a 77 and sits in a tie for 36th place after two rounds.
Cory Churchman is tied for 46th place after shooting rounds of 76 and 74. Juan Munoz is one shot back after a 75 and 76 while Nick Rodriguez shot a 77 and 76.
North Texas as a team is in 10th place after two rounds of play. The Mean Green shot a 293 and a 296 UAB, the host school, is the leader after two rounds at 20-under par.
The final round begins tomorrow with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
