Churchman Shines In Round One At NCAA Tucson Regional

Junior Cory Churchman shot a first round two-under par 70 to lead North Texas at the NCAA Tucson Regional in Marana, Arizona.

MARANA, Ariz. --  Junior Cory Churchman fired a two-under par 70 to lead the North Texas men’s golf team in the opening round of the NCAA Tucson Regional Monday afternoon at Gallery Golf Club in Marana, Ariz.

The Mean Green are within striking distance after a first round team score of 296 (eight-over par) and are nine shots from fifth-placed California (No. 13 in the nation). North Texas finished the opening round in ninth place.

Churchman, at one point was tied for the individual lead, finished tied for 10th with a 70 after a blistering three-under par 33 on the first nine holes.

Freshman Thomas Rosenmueller shot a first round three-over par 75 to finish tied for 38th. Rosenmueller birdied three of his final 12 holes to finish the round. Classmate Ian Snyman had an up and down round with a three-over par 75 to finish tied for 38th. Snyman finished in style with two birdies in his last three holes.

Junior Nick Rodriguez, who is playing in just his fifth tournament of the season, shot a four-over par 76 to tie for 49th but finished the round with a bogey and a double-bogey on his final two holes.

Sophomore Michael Cotton rounded out the scoring for North Texas with a six-over par 78 to tie for 60th place.

The Mean Green will begin round two at 9 a.m. central time playing with No. 50 St. Mary’s and No. 36 North Florida.
