Mean Green Win Conference USA Title In Dramatic Fashion
NT Wins Match Play, Knocks Off Charlotte And UAB For The Crown
April 29, 2015
TEXARKANA, Ark. -- It was drama that Conference USA wanted when they went to match play to decide its golf champion, and it was drama they got. North Texas sophomore Cory Churchman made a five-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to clinch to C-USA title for the Mean Green and seal a hard fought win over No. 30 UAB. North Texas clinches the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament and will be making its 34th appearance.
"This is a great win for us against a great program in UAB," head coach Brad Stracke said. "We kept fighting the whole way and it was a tough four days, but I'm very proud of our guys and happy for them."
The putt ended a marathon day for North Texas that saw them defeat Charlotte in the semifinals in the morning, and then go back and forth with UAB for the title.
The championship match saw freshman Michael Cotton dominate his opponent, winning 5 & 4, and Juan Munoz won his match 2 & 1, leaving Churchman the chance to clinch the title. UAB made a late charge, winning one match, sending another match with Jason Roets to extra holes, but Churchman made his birdie putt on the first hole to finish his match.
The conference title for North Texas is the 30th in school history and the first since joining Conference USA. It is the third conference title for North Texas in the last four seasons and the third under Stracke.
The semifinal match against Charlotte in the morning saw its share of drama. Munoz was trailing by one holes with two to play. He birdied the final two holes to clinch the match for the Mean Green 3 & 1, as Roets was already playing extra holes.
Cotton, Munoz and Churchman all won their matches on the day, while Roets ended up in extra holes in both matches.
Three conference titles in the last four seasons for NT is the best stretch for Mean Green golf since the early 1970's when NT won Missouri Valley Conference titles in '72, '74 and '75.
