Munoz Wins C-USA Championship, NT Advances To Match Play
Mean Green Have Lowest Stroke Play Score, Looking For 30th Conference Title
TEXARKANA -- Senior Juan Munoz captured the Conference USA individual championship, and the North Texas men's golf team finished with the lowest score in stroke play to advance to Wednesday's match play to determine the league champion. Munoz captured the league crown with a final round score of 2-under par 70 as he finished at 5-under par to win for the second time this season. His final round of 70 was the lowest score of the day in the field.
Munoz is the 11th North Texas golfer in school history to win a conference title and the third golfer in the last five years to win a conference championship.
NT finished the stroke play portion of the championship with the lowest overall team score at 3-under par. The Mean Green enters match play as the No. 1 seed and will square off with the No. 4 seed Charlotte 49ers Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m. The winner advances to the finals to face the winner of the UAB-UTEP match. The finals begin at 12:30 p.m.
The victory assures Munoz a bid to the NCAA Regional as an individual golfer should the Mean Green not advance as a team.
Cory Churchman notched his third top-10 finish of the season as he closed strong with an even-par score of 72 to finish at even-par for the tournament and tied for fifth place. Jason Roets, who held the clubhouse lead the first two days, struggled in the final round and finished tied 17th place. Freshman Michael Cotton had his best round of the tourney with a 1-over par 73 and Alejandro Villasana shot a third-round of 77 as they both finished tied for 29th place.
NT is gunning for its 30th overall conference title and first since joining Conference USA.
