TEXARKANA – With the Conference USA semifinal match tied at 2-2, freshman Ian Snyman battled back to advance to extra holes but ultimately lost on the second playoff hole as the North Texas men’s golf team lost in dramatic fashion against LA Tech, 3-2, Wednesday morning at Texarkana Country Club.
Due to impending bad weather, the four teams started match play late Tuesday afternoon and No. 1 seed UAB easily took down No. 4 UTSA, 5-0. In the second semifinal match, it would take much longer.
Play was suspended due to darkness Tuesday night with LA Tech holding a 3-2 lead as all five matches had not been completed. Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m. play resumed and LA Tech took a 2-0 lead with junior Cory Churchman falling to Ben Robinson, 1-up and Luke Neeley defeated junior Alejandro Villasana, 3&2.
Sophomore Michael Cotton cut the lead to 2-1 after taking down Tech’s Chuck Spears, 2&1, as Cotton improved to 3-0 all-time in match play.
Freshman Ian Snyman came into the morning down one with only the final hole to play. Victor Lange missed a 10-foot putt and Snyman won the hole to even the match at all-square and force extra holes. After an even 19th hole, Snyman missed a chance to send the match further as Lange clinched the victory in 20 holes.
Freshman Thomas Rosenmueller defeated LA Tech’s Jacob Wyatt, 2&1, to give the Mean Green their second point of the match.
North Texas will be waiting to see if their name is called as an at-large team to participate in the NCAA Regionals starting May 16-18. The Mean Green are currently No. 61 in the golfstat.com rankings.
