Roets Storms To The Lead At Conference USA Championship
Mean Green In Second Place At 10-Under Par
TEXARKANA, Tex. -- A red-hot Jason Roets matched his career-low with a 7-under 65 to take the lead at the Conference USA Championship and put the NT men's golf team in a prime position after the first round of play.
Roets was nearly flawless on the day as he posted eight birdies and was at 8-under par until a final hole bogey dropped him back to 7-under. He holds a two-stroke lead over the field as he tries to avenge his finish from last season at the C-USA Championship in which he finished tied for 61st place.
The Mean Green had a torrid start to the tournament with their third lowest round of the year at 10-under par 278. Led by Roets, three different players are in the top-11 of the field. NT is in second place, just two strokes behind No. 30 UAB. The Mean Green is gunning for one of the top-four spots, as the top-four teams after 54 holes advance to match play to decide the conference title.
NT is nine strokes ahead of the fifth place teams after one round of play. Senior Juan Munoz is tied for fourth place after a 3-under par 69. Munoz got off to a shaky start at 2-over par after his first four holes, but he played his final 14 holes bogey free and had five birdies.
Alejandro Villasana is tied for 11th place with a 1-under par 71. He posted five birdies on the round. Freshman Michael Cotton is tied for 27th place at 1-over par 73 and Cory Churchman is 2-over par and tied for 41st place.
