North Texas Leads C-USA Championship After Round One At -5
Churchman, Rosenmueller Tied For Second Individually At -4
TEXARKANA, Ark. - The Mean Green opened the Conference USA Championship with a bang Sunday, posting a 5-under round one from Texarkana Country Club for their best round of the season. North Texas leads the 13-team field after day one, while a pair of its players, senior Cory Churchman and sophomore Thomas Rosenmueller are tied for second individually at 4-under.
The Mean Green lead second place UTEP by four strokes heading into Monday's second round. In addition to the strong opening rounds of Churchman and Rosenmueller, senior Andrew Hudson sits in a 10th place tie at even par.
Due to inclement weather, the 54-hole stroke play event continues with rounds two and three on Monday, with the top four teams then moving on to a match play round on Tuesday. The winner of match play will win the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals in May.
"We had some great play today from the guys," head coach Brad Stracke said. "It's going to take a team effort to get the win. The guys really get along well and are playing very hard for each other."
Churchman fired a 4-under 68 during his first round, birdieing on five occasions, and bogeying just once. The senior birdied No. 1, No. 6, No. 10, and went back-to-back on No. 16 and No. 17. His strong performance puts him just one stroke behind the individual leader, Charlotte's Seth Gandy.
Rosenmueller continued his torrid pace of late, joining Churchman near the top of the leaderboard at 4-under after his own 68 Sunday. The sophomore birdied seven times during his first round, including a pair of back-to-back birdies on the first and second, as well as the 16th and 17th holes, respectively.
Hudson is also in the top 10, tied for 10th following his even-par 72. He eagled the 12th hole, and also birdied twice, on the fourth and 17th holes.
North Texas' team score of 283 marks the best performance in a single round this season by the Mean Green, eclipsing the 286 they put together at the Valspar Collegiate in March.
The Mean Green are slated to be back in action Monday for the second round, which is set to tee off at 7:30 a.m. CT. Fans can follow along with live results, courtesy of Golfstat.
