Roets Leads Second Round Surge For NT In San Antonio
Mean Green In Ninth Place After 36 Holes
SAN ANTONIO - After a sluggish opening round, the North Texas men's golf team regained their rhythm they have had much of the spring season to shoot a 9-under par score in the second round of the Lone Star Invite. The strong second round helped erase a 6-over 294 in the first round to put North Texas alone in ninth place after 36 holes.
The Mean Green is positioned to climb the leaderboard in the tightly packed field with a similar final round. Senior Jason Roets sizzled in both rounds, as he shot a 2-under and a 4-under 68 and he is tied for fourth place after two-rounds.
Roets enters the final round three shots off the lead. He was nearly flawless on the day, with only three bogeys to go along with nine birdies. Michael Cotton is tied for 46th place after firing a 75 in the opening round and then a 1-under par 71 in the second round. Cory Churchman was 1-under after 18 holes, but struggled in the second round at 5-over par. He is tied for 57th place.
Juan Munoz rebounded from an opening round of 78 to shoot a 1-under par 71 in the second round. Alejandro Villasana the had the wildest two rounds of the day, first shooting an 81, then cutting 12 strokes off to shoot a 3-under par 69 in the second round. Villasana had no birdies in the first round, but in the second round he posted four birdies and one eagle.
Nick Rodriguez, playing as an individual, is tied for 37th place after a 2-over 74 and a 1-under par score of 71.
No. 6 Texas Tech holds the overall team lead by nine strokes at 27-under par for the tournament.
