Rosenmueller Tops Leaderboard After Day One In San Diego
Thomas Rosenmueller Is Season-Best Five-Under Par After Two Rounds
SAN DIEGO - Sophomore Thomas Rosenmueller sits atop the leaderboard after the first and second rounds of the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic from San Diego Country Club in Southern California.
Rosenmueller fired a 3-under par 69, tying his best round of the 2016-17 season, in round one, while following that with a 2-under 70 in round two. His 5-under par day one leaves him one stroke ahead of a quartet who are tied in second place. North Texas sits in 13th place as a team, at 16-over, 22 shots off the pace of the Texas Longhorns.
"Thomas played great today," head coach Brad Stracke said. "He hit a lot of fairways and greens the first 36 holes. When Thomas gets opportunities for birdies, he usually takes advantage of them. He is an exceptional putter."
Rosenmueller birdied six holes Monday during the opening round, including back-to-back birdies on the eighth and ninth holes, respectively. He also birdied five times in the second round to close his afternoon, going back-to-back on No. 8 and No. 9 again, as well as on No. 1 and No. 2.
His Monday performance in round one marked the sixth time that Rosenmueller has been under 70 during his collegiate career, and second time in as many events.
Unfortunately for the Mean Green, aside from Rosenmueller's strong day, no other North Texas golfer is above a tie for 57th place, which is where senior Cory Churchman stands, at 6-over for the tournament. Churchman did rebound from a tough first round, carding an even-par 72 in the second round.
Sophomore Ian Snyman was just 2-over par after his first round 74, but he struggled in the second round, falling to 8-over par overall.
The Mean Green are back in action Tuesday morning for the third and final round, which is set to tee off at 10:54 a.m. CT. Fans can follow along with live results, courtesy of Golfstat.
