Cotton In The Top-20 As NT Opens Season In San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – Freshman Michael Cotton turned in a steady 36 holes of play to lead the North Texas men’s golf team at the opening day of the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational. Cotton, playing in only his second tournament, shot a 3-over par 145 and is tied for 19th place after the opening day.

The North Texas men’s golf team, playing in the spring season for the first time, cut eight strokes off its opening round of 298 to shoot a second-round of 290 to inch their way up the leaderboard. The Mean Green is in eighth place after two-rounds, but are only six strokes away from the top-3 after 36 holes.

Cotton had an adventurous day with seven birdies in his two rounds of play. In his first-round Cotton was 6-over par after his first six holes, but played his final 12 holes at 4-under par. His second round was steadier at 1-over par 72 with only three bogeys and two birdies.

Senior Juan Munoz is two-strokes behind at 5-over par 147 after 36 holes. Munoz opened with a 5-over par 76 but rebounded in the second-round with an even-par score of 71. He is tied for 27th place.

Jason Roets and Cory Churchman are tied for 32nd place at 6-over par 148. Roets was 3-over par in both of his rounds while Churchman was 4-over in his first-round and 2-over in his second-rounds.



Alejandro Villasana struggled on the day with an 81 and 76 in his two rounds. Julien Marot, playing as an individual, shot a 19-over par through two rounds of play.

Baylor has a five-stroke lead heading into the final round of play over the host, UTSA.
