Mean Green Begins Practice in the Big Easy

New Orleans (12-10-04) - The North Texas football team arrived in the Big Easy today to prepare for its fourth consecutive Wyndham New Orleans Bowl.

The Mean Green had a light work out at the New Orleans Saints indoor practice facility, and head coach Darrell Dickey said he thinks his team was able to work out the kinks from a long day of travel.

“It’s great to be back in New Orleans. This is a great reward for this team,” Dickey said. “I think we got to work out some of the jitters today, but we have a lot of preparation to do between now and Tuesday evening when we face a very good Southern Mississippi team.”

The Mean Green worked out in helmets and shorts, and concentrated mostly on special teams. Junior kicker Nick Bazaldua had a great first practice, nailing several field goals from beyond 40 yards. The first team All-Sun Belt Conference kicker was 13 of 16 during the regular season with a long of 51 yards.

“We feel good after the first day,” said senior center Andy Brewster. “I think everyone got the jet lag out of their legs and now we are just trying to get focused for Tuesday night.”

The Mean Green will return to practice at 10 a.m. Saturday at the New Orleans Zephyrs practice facility before meeting up with the Golden Eagles for a team party at Six Flags.

New Orleans is such a fun city to have a bowl game, we really look forward to this every year,” said senior receiver TJ Culberson.
