DENTON (11/28/06) Former North Texas great Zeke Martin passed away yesterday after injuries sustained in a car accident. Martin, who was inducted into the North Texas Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989, was 82.
“It is a sad day for North Texas athletics as we have lost a true friend and pioneer,” Director of Athletics Rick Villarreal said. “He has been an ambassador for this entire university and his service to Mean Green athletics has never wavered since his time as a student-athlete. His contribution to the advancement of North Texas athletics will never be forgotten and he will forever be remembered as a member of the North Texas family“
Martin was a quarterback for the Eagles from 1947-50 earning all-conference recognition three straight seasons. He ranks 10th all-time at North Texas in total offense (2,539) and passing yards (2,522).
Martin played in the 1948 Salad Bowl and also played on the North Texas tennis and basketball teams before playing pro football in the Canadian Football League. He later served as the mayor of Denton in 1968 and 1969.
A visitation will be held on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the DeBerry Furneral Home in Denton and the funeral will take place on Friday, at 1 p.m. at the First Bapist Church in Denton.
