After a week off, the North Texas football team is back in action as they host UTSA in the home finale at Apogee Stadium on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. . The Mean Green is going for its sixth straight win, which would be the longest winning streak since 2004, and a perfect 6-0 record at home.
NT is tied with Rice atop the C-USA West Division standings, but holds the tie breaker with the Owls. UTSA has won three straight games and is just a game behind NT and Rice. It is the first meeting between the two teams.
The 2013 team is the only team in school history that has scored 21 points or more in each of the first 10 games of the season. The Mean Green offense has scored 323 points and is on pace for the best scoring average in a since 1951, which is the best in school history. The 323 points already scored by the Mean Green offense through 10 games has already topped each of the last nine seasons.
The Mean Green has the biggest single season turnaround since 2002, having already surpassed its win total by three games from 2012. With one more win, the Mean Green would have the biggest turnaround in a single season since 1984. One more win will also give North Texas its eighth win of the season, which would be just the 13th time in school history the Mean Green has won eight games or more.
North Texas leads Conference USA and ranks third in the nation in Red Zone defense, allowing opponents to score just 58.6 percent of the time inside Mean Green 20-yard line (17-of-29). NT is also ranked 13th in the nation in Red Zone offense. Only North Texas and Louisville (12th offense, 5th defense) rank in the top-15 in Red Zone offense and Red Zone defense.
Dan McCarney has guided NT to seven wins and with one more win it will be the second most wins in a single season for McCarney in his 15 years of coaching.
North Texas is the third ranked defense in C-USA and 27th in the nation allowing only 357.7 yards a game. The Mean Green leads C-USA in points allowed at 18.6 points a game and is tied for 10th in the nation.
North Texas is one of only two non-BCS schools (Bowling Green) to rank inside the top-15 in points allowed this season. NT is allowing fewer points a game than 13 of the 14 SEC schools, 9 of the 10 Big 12 schools, 11 of the 12 Pac-12 schools, 10 of the 12 Big 10 schools and 12 of the 14 ACC schools this season.
The Mean Green defense held its fifth straight opponent to 16 points or less and for the season is allowing only 18.6 points a game. It is the first time since 1973 the Mean Green has allowed 16 points or less in five straight games. If North Texas holds UTSA to 16 points or less it would be the first time since 1959 that the Mean Green has held an opponent to less than 16 points in six straight games.
North Texas has 31 total sacks on the year, which is tied for the 10th most in a single season in school history. The eight sacks against UTEP were the most in a single game since 2002. The 31 sacks rank sixth in school history and are the most in a single season since 2002. NT is ranked 10th in the nation in sacks.
