DENTON (11/18/06) - North Texas will play its home finale and will try to even its conference record tonight against Sun Belt Conference foe Florida Atlantic. The game will kickoff at 6 p.m. at Fouts Field and can be heard on the Mean Green Radio Network with George Dunham and Hank Dickenson.
North Texas notched its third win of the season with a 16-7 win at Louisiana-Lafayette Saturday. The Mean Green has struggled offensively this season but has been sparked the past two weeks by an offensive platoon labeled the “Green Team”. The North Texas defense had its best showing of the season Saturday against the Ragin’ Cajuns. Florida Atlantic is also looking to close the season with a couple wins and will bring the Sun Belt’s top passing attack to Fouts Field.
North Texas head coach Darrell Dickey will be coaching his last home game at Fouts Field Saturday after it was announced that he will not return in 2007. Dickey was the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year for four straight years from 2001-2004, leading his team to four straight conference titles and four straight bowl games. He has a career record of 42-62 and a 34-20 record in conference games. He surpassed Hall of Fame coach Hayden Fry earlier this year for career wins at North Texas and will conclude his career ranked fourth in career wins at the school. Florida Atlantic is led by legendary coach Howard Schnellenburger who has been a collegiate coach for 22 years. He has coached at Oklahoma, Louisville and won a national championship while serving as the head coach at Miami in 1983. Schnellenburger has a career record of 131-114-3.
North Texas has never beaten Florida Atlantic, with the Owls winning the only two meetings between the two teams. Both games in the series have been decided by a touchdown or less. The two teams met at Fouts Field in 2004 with FAU winning 20-13 and then last year in Miami, the Owls won 26-23.
