North Texas Game Notes
Coming off a 28-16 victory over Rice to move into a tie atop the C-USA West Division standings, NT continues its three-game home stand with a homecoming visit from UTEP. The Mean Green has won four straight games and is in a three-way tie for the division lead with Rice and Tulane at 4-1. Kickoff from Apogee Stadium is at 2:30.
UTEP has lost six straight games and is winless in league play. NT leads the series with UTEP 13-5-2 as the two schools meet for the first time since 1980.
Brelan Chancellor ended the North Texas punt return drought of 107 games without a TD with his 65-yard return against Rice. He leads the nation in punt returns this season averaging 21.1 yards a return.
Chancellor is one of only two players in the nation, Josh Stewart of Oklahoma State being the other, to have two punt returns of over 60-yards on the year. He is one of only five players with both a kickoff and punt return for TD in the nation. He has compiled the most punt return yards in a single season since Marcus Camper in 1988 with 316, and is closing in on the school record of 380 yards, set by J.T. Smith in 1976.
Dan McCarney has 15 wins through his first 33 games and reached 15 victories one game faster than his mentor Hayden Fry. McCarney is the fastest coach to reach 15 wins at North Texas since Rod Rust.
North Texas is looking to stay perfect at Apogee Stadium in 2013 and notch the first 5-0 start at home since 2003. The Mean Green can become just the eighth team in school history to start the home season out at 5-0 with a win over UTEP.
The Mean Green closed out the month of October with four wins and a 4-1 record. It is the first winning month of October since 2004 and the second most wins in the month October in school history.
The Mean Green defense held it fourth straight opponent to less than 20 points and for the season is allowing only 19.9 points a game. It is the first time since 2002 the Mean Green has allowed less than 20 points in four straight games. North Texas has 23 total sacks on the year, which is tied for the 10th most in a single season in school history.
The Mean Green defense is second in the nation in allowing only one 4th down conversion this season. Penn State is the only team left in the country not to allow a 4th down conversion. The 2013 team is the only team in school history that has scored 21 points or more in each of the first nine games of the season. NT is on pace for the best scoring average in a single season since 1969.
