Nwigwe Named SBC Defensive Player Of The Week

DENTON, Texas (11/3/08) North Texas linebacker Tobe Nwigwe was named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week today after his efforts in sealing the Mean Green’s first win of the season at Western Kentucky.

Nwigwe secured North Texas’ first win of the season when he intercepted a Western Kentucky pass and returned it 97 yards for a touchdown with no time remaining in the game to give the Mean Green a 51-40 victory.

With his team leading 45-40 with under a minute to play, Nwigwe led a defensive stand that stopped Western Kentucky twice from the 1-yard line before his interception that sealed the deal.

Nwigwe single-handedly led the goal line stand, assisting on a tackle for no gain on first and goal from the 1-yard line and having a solo stop for no gain on second and goal from the 1-yard line.

On third down he intercepted the pass and returned it 97-yards for the deciding score. It was the longest interception return by any Sun Belt Conference player this season and the second-longest by any player in college football this season.

Nwigwe had eight tackles in the game and currently leads the team and ranks third in the league in tackles with 90 for the year.
