North Texas Game Notes
North Texas and Rice square off in a key C-USA West Division showdown on Halloween night at 6:30 p.m. at Apogee Stadium. NT has won three straight games and is only one game behind Rice, who has captured five straight games. The Mean Green can become bowl eligible with a win.
NT is coming off a 55-14 trouncing of Southern Miss, the biggest road victory for the Mean Green since 1958 and the most road points since 1962. The game will be broadcast nationally on Fox Sports 1.
North Texas is 6-4-1 all-time on Halloween. The Owls lead the series with North Texas 2-1 and are making only their second trip to Denton.
North Texas has scored 21 points or more in the first eight games of the season for the first time in the school's 98-year history. The 254 total points through the first eight games are the most scored since 1967. North Texas is averaging 31.8 points a game, the second highest in school history, and is on pace to score the second most points in school history.
North Texas had six rushing touchdowns against Southern Miss, the most in a game since 2011, both under head coach Dan McCarney. Since 2003, NT has rushed for six TD's in a game only three times, a 52-14 win over Baylor, a 59-7 win against MTSU, and the win over USM.
Brelan Chancellor notched his seventh career 100-yard receiving game against Southern Miss and he climbed to fifth all-time. He is second in C-USA in all-purpose yards and eighth in the nation with 171.5.
Quarterback Derek Thompson broke the school record held by Steve Ramsey for most career 300-yard passing games with his seventh against Southern Miss. The record had stood since 1969.
The North Texas defense has allowed less than 250 yards in three of the last four games. The Mean Green ranks third in C-USA in total defense and 43rd in the nation. NT leads CUSA in scoring defense and is ranked 23rd in the nation allowing only 20.4 points a game.
North Texas leads Conference USA and ranks third in the nation in Red Zone defense, allowing opponents to score just 59 percent of the time inside Mean Green 20-yard line (16-of-27).
Including North Texas, C-USA has six teams competing for the first year in league play. Only North Texas has a winning overall and conference record.
North Texas is 5-0 this season when scoring more than 21 points and 0-3 when scoring 21or less. In 32 games under Dan McCarney, the Mean Green is 13-3 when scoring more than 21 points and 1-15 when scoring 21 points or less.
