Troy, Alabama (10/28/06) The Troy football team scored two second-half touchdowns to come back and defeat North Texas, 14-6, on Saturday afternoon at Movie Gallery Stadium.
The Trojans (3-4, 2-0 Sun Belt) won its second straight conference game, while the Mean Green (2-6, 1-3) has lost its eighth straight road game.
We had plenty of chances today,” said head coach Darrell Dickey. “We made too many mistakes on offense and were not able to capitalize. Our players’ efforts were outstanding, but it was not good enough.”
The Mean Green defense held Troy to 55 yards of total offense in the first half, but the Trojans exploded in the second period for two touchdowns and 188 total yards on offense. Holding a slim 7-6 advantage heading into the fourth quarter, the Trojans used a hurry-up offense to extend its lead to eight points with an 11-play, 50-yard touchdown drive.
The Mean Green offense sputtered in the game, acquiring its only points from two Denis Hopovac field goals. North Texas was 0 for 13 in third-down conversions, including a key possession with 2:14 left in the game. After failing to convert on third and five, quarterback Woody Wilson was sacked for a loss at the North Texas 45-yard line on fourth down. North Texas was forced to give up the ball, and Troy held on for the win.
North Texas had several opportunities to score points in the second and third quarters. The Mean Green offense failed to convert two third-and-goal situations after starting the drives at midfield. North Texas also committed costly penalties that halted each of its first three possessions in the game. Overall, the Mean Green was flagged for eight penalties for 65 yards.
North Texas took advantage of an Aaron Weathers interception in the second quarter that gave the Mean Green the ball at the Troy 19-yard line to score the only points of the first half. Hopovac kicked a 20-yard field goal after the Mean Green failed to convert a third and goal. North Texas headed into the locker room with a 3-0 advantage, holding a lead at the half for only the third time this year.
While the Mean Green offense continued to stall in the third quarter, Troy’s drove 86 yards on 10 plays to take a 7-6 lead on a six-yard pass from Omar Haugabook to Gary Banks.
North Texas had an opportunity to retake the lead at the end of the third quarter after taking control of the ball at the Troy 47-yard line. Driving down the field, Wilson completed a 25-yard pass on fourth down to Johnny Quinn to set up North Texas for first and goal. After a penalty, North Texas had six plays inside the Troy 10-yard line but was forced to settle for a 22-yard field goal.
After North Texas attempted an unsuccessful on-side kick, Troy used four minutes of clock to move 50 yards down the field to score its second touchdown of the game. Running back Anthony Jones rushed in from the five-yard line to put Troy ahead, 14-6.
Senior wide receiver Johnny Quinn was back in the starting lineup after seeing his streak of 41 consecutive starts snapped last week at Arkansas State with an ankle injury. He also extended his streak to 43 straight games with at least one reception, which is the third-longest current streak in the nation. He finished the game with eight receptions for 108 yards.
North Texas returns home next weekend for a non-conference match-up with Louisiana Tech on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 6 pm.
