North Texas Game Notes
The Mean Green returns to Apogee Stadium looking to end a two-game losing streak as they host Middle Tennessee on Saturday night at 6 p.m. North Texas lost its league opener at Tulane 24-21 while MTSU enters the game having dropped two in a row as well, losing 24-17 at home to East Carolina. The two schools, former rivals in the Sun Belt Conference, meet for the 13th time overall with North Texas holding a 7-5 edge.
The North Texas defense allowed a season-low 227 yards against Tulane. It was the fewest yards allowed by North Texas since holding Texas Southern to 185 total yards in 2012. It is the fewest yards allowed against an FBS team since the 2006 season.
North Texas has lost three games this year by a combined 33 points, which includes a 24-point loss to No. 7 Georgia. The two losses against non-ranked opponents (Ohio and Tulane) are by a combined nine points. The last time North Texas had a smaller margin of defeat in its first three losses of the season was 1994 when its first three losses were by a combined 24 points.
A win over MTSU would give North Texas its best record through six games at 3-3 in a decade. 2003 was the last time the Mean Green was 3-3 through six games. Brelan Chancellor is the active career leader in multiple categories nationwide. He is the nation’s active leader in kickoff return yards a game (80.8) and kickoff returns per game (3.3). He is the only player in the nation in the top-10 in kickoff returns and punt returns. Chancellor is third in punt returns and seventh in kickoff returns.
Derek Thompson has passed for 1,346 yards through the first five games, which is the most passing yards through the first five games in school history. He eclipsed Mitch Maher’s previous record set in 1994 when he tossed for 1,313 yards after five games. Thompson is on pace for a school record 3,230 yards, which would be only the second 3,000-yard passing season in history.
Middle Tennessee enters the game as the top team in Conference USA with 16 sacks on the year, while North Texas is the second best team in allowing just one sack per game. The Mean Green has given up only five sacks, which is tied for 18th in the nation.
