DENTON, Texas (10/4/08) T.Y. Hilton caught two touchdown passes to lead the FIU football team to a 42-10 victory against North Texas on Saturday night at Fouts Field.
The Golden Panthers improve to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the Sun Belt Conference, while the Mean Green (0-5, 0-1 Sun Belt) is still winless through its first five games. FIU ties the series at 2-2.
Although North Texas held the edge in many of the statistical categories, the Mean Green was hurt by big plays and turnovers. FIU took a 28-0 halftime, and NT was unable to make up the lost ground.
Hilton finished the game with three catches for 145 yards. Two of his catches were for touchdown receptions of 65 and 73 yards. FIU also blocked a North Texas punt, which was returned for seven points. The three plays gave FIU an early 21-0 lead. A Mean Green interception led to another FIU touchdown with 17 seconds left in the opening half.
North Texas quarterback Giovanni Vizza completed 32-of-46 passes for 274 yards. He also threw three interceptions, which led to two FIU scores. Casey Fitzgerald caught 10 passes for 120 yards, his first 100-yard game of the season and the seventh of his career.
The Mean Green compiled 428 yards of total offense, compared to FIU’s 347. North Texas also held the edge in passing yards (309 to 237) and possession time (34:42 to 25:18). FIU did not turn over the ball, while the Mean Green fumbled once and threw three interceptions.
Jeremy Knott hit a 28-yard field goal in the third quarter. He went 1-for-2 on the night, missing a 34-yard attempt in the second quarter. Micah Mosley rushed for a one-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter to add to NT’s score.
North Texas returns to action next week when it faces Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday, October 11 at 6 pm at Fouts Field.
