DENTON (9/29/06) - The North Texas football team returns to familiar territories, Fouts Field and Sun Belt Conference play against Middle Tennessee on Saturday. The game will be televised on ESPN Regional (KFWD Channel 52) with the radio call on the Mean Green Radio Network. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CT.
The Mean Green is coming off a 33-13 loss at Akron, but features one of the Sun Belt’s most potent passing attacks. Quarterback Woody Wilson is second in the conference in pass efficiency (119.3), and ranks fifth in total offense. The North Texas offensive line has paved the way, ranking 25th in the nation in sacks allowed at 1.25 a game. The Mean Green faces a stingy defense in Middle Tennessee.
The Blue Raiders own the SBC’s top defense, which allows only 108 rushing yards a game. J.K. Sabb directs an MTSU defense that ranks second in the country in tackles for loss with 10.25 per game.
North Texas has taken four of the five Sun Belt titles, compiling a 27-6 conference record. The 2005 season snapped a streak of 26 straight SBC wins, which ranked second in the nation at the time.
North Texas is looking forward to the beginning of Sun Belt play as the Mean Green has fared much better over the past five years in conference games than it has in its tough non-league schedule. North Texas has played one team ranked in the top 10 in the nation every year since 2001, including four teams ranked in the top 5. The production against conference foes has been much more likable for North Texas since 2001.
