Mean Green Will Kick Off Champions Weekend Friday
Weekend Kicks Off With Induction Of 2017 Hall Of Fame Class Friday Night
DENTON – North Texas athletics will kick off Champions Weekend beginning Friday, Sept. 22, with the induction of the 2017 Hall of Fame class. The 1967, 1987 and 2013 Mean Green football teams will be honored on Saturday, during the Conference USA opener against UAB at 5:30 p.m. from Apogee Stadium.
The 2013 Heart of Dallas Bowl champion Mean Green will be honored on-field at halftime and former student-athletes will be able to pick up their bowl rings. The 2013 team finished 9-4 and knocked off UNLV, 36-14, in front of a large crowd at the Cotton Bowl.
The 1987 team finished 7-5 and reached the NCAA Div. I-AA Playoffs, while the 1967 squad was the Missouri Valley Conference champion at 7-1-1. Both teams will also be honored during the second quarter of Saturday’s game.
Other honorees during Saturday’s game include North Texas Hall of Fame member Abner Haynes, who will be presented with the UNT Medal of Honor from President Neal Smatresk. Also, 54 students will be presented as National Merit Scholars.
Saturday also marks the battle flag raising ceremony, adjacent to the Alumni Pavilion, which will take place at 3 p.m.
