Gibson Ignites Mean Green to 6-Stroke Lead

LANTANA, Tex. (9/15/03) -- Brad Gibson led four North Texas golfers who finished in the top 10 as the Mean Green men's golf team posted a six-stroke lead Monday after the opening two rounds of the Mean Green Classic at the Lantana Golf Club.

North Texas, in fact, was the only team in the 16-team field to finish under par at the par 72 course, compiling rounds of 287 and 284 to stand at five-under 571 after the first day of play. In second place behind the Mean Green was McNeese State at one-over 577, followed by Texas State (580), Houston (581) and Washington State and Stephen F. Austin tied for fifth at 584.

Gibson recorded rounds of 70-71--141 to finish Monday's play in a seven-way tie for third place individually. Also in the top 10 individual rankings for the Mean Green were Thomas Kulcak (T3, 72-69 -- 141), Zach Atkinson (T10, 70-72--142) and Reid McPherson (T10, 73-69--142).

The third and final round of play will be held Tuesday.
