AUSTIN (9/4/04) The No. 7 Texas Longhorns defeated North Texas, 65-0, on Saturday evening at Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium in front of a sellout crowd of 82,956.
Senior running back Cedric Benson set the tone for the Longhorns early, scoring on a 38-yard run two minutes into the game on Texas’ first possession. UT converted its next three possessions, including two more rushing touchdowns, to give the Longhorns a 24-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. North Texas was unable to recover, recording only four first downs and one third down conversion in the game.
Texas continued its offensive surge in the second quarter with two more rushing touchdowns by Benson and Selvin Young and two field goals by senior Dusty Mangum. The Longhorns added three touchdowns in the second half to seal the win.
Texas running backs Benson and Selvin Young paced the Longhorn attack, combining for 283 rushing yards and four touchdowns. The Longhorns’ defense held the Mean Green offense to 38 rushing yards and 130 combined yards. Senior linebacker Derrick Johnson forced three fumbles, resulting in 14 Texas points.
The Mean Green offense was limited to just 130 yards of total offense on the night. Trailing 17-0, NT mounted a 43-yard drive, its best of the night, before seeing it end with a fumble at the Texas 37-yard line.
North Texas senior quarterback Scott Hall completed 8-of-17 passes for 78 yards, and senior tight end Andy Blount posted a team-high four receptions for 49 yards. Kevin Moore was NT’s leading rusher, finishing with 27 yards on nine carries.
North Texas returns to Denton for its home opener on Saturday, Sept. 11 at against Florida Atlantic at Fouts Field.
