Mean Green Brings The Ponies To Denton For Metroplex Clash Saturday
North Texas Faces SMU For Only The Third Time At Home
DENTON - The start of a new 10-year series with the SMU Mustangs begins on Saturday morning as North Texas hosts the Ponies at Apogee Stadium at 11 a.m. The game can be seen on Fox Sports and heard on the Mean Green Radio Network.
The Mean Green is looking to bounce back from a season opening defeat to No. 24 Texas. SMU is also 0-1 on the year after Baylor knocked off the Mustangs 45-0. The Mean Green is facing the Ponies for the 34th time in series history, but SMU is playing in Denton for just the third time. NT has won the only two games in Denton in 1990 and 2006.
North Texas is 64-31-3 all-time in home opening games. The Mean Green has won two straight home opening games and allowed only a combined 13 points in those games. Head coach Dan McCarney in his 15 previous home openers is 11-4 and 2-1 with the Mean Green.
Under McCarney, the Mean Green has amassed a home record of 12-5 at Apogee stadium since 2011, which is the third-best home winning percentage in the state of Texas, behind only Baylor and Rice. NT has had a better home mark since 2011 than TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Houston, Texas Tech, Arkansas, Miami, SMU, Arizona, Tulsa, Georgia Tech, N.C. State, Pitt, Vanderbilt, West Virginia Purdue, Virginia and Tennessee.
With a win over SMU, North Texas can have its third straight 1-1 start to a season. It would mark the first time the Mean Green has been .500 or better in three straight years since 1990-92.
McCarney is 5-9 in non-conference games, but is 4-1 in non-conference games at Apogee Stadium. McCarney lost the very first game in Apogee to Houston in 2011, but is now riding a four-game win streak over non-conference opponents in Denton. The Mean Green defeated Indiana 24-21 in 2011, Texas Southern 34-7 in 2012, Idaho 40-6 in 2013 and Ball State 34-27 in 2013.
The two games when SMU has visited Denton has produced record breaking crowds. In 1990, when the Mean Green hosted the Ponies at Fouts Field, a sellout and school record crowd of 22,750 watch NT win 14-7 over SMU. In 2006, a crowd of 25,231, the then third-largest crowd, watch a Mean Green victory of 24-6. The Apogee Stadium record is 28,075 and the school-record is 29,437.
