North Texas senior linebacker Zach Orr was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week after pacing the Mean Green to a 40-6 rout of Idaho in the season opener.
Orr led all defenders with 11 tackles and added one quarterback sack and one tackle for loss in the victory. Orr also forced and recovered a fumble and had one pass break-up.
Orr, a 2013 Lombardi Award nominee, was the leader of a defense that held Idaho scoreless for the last 58 minutes of the game. The defense allowed just 124 total yards of offense in the second half, including 24 on the ground.
The six points allowed by the North Texas defense was the fewest given up in a home game since a 24-6 win over SMU in 2006. It was the fewest points allowed in a season opener since 1994 and it extended the North Texas winning streak to 31 straight games when allowing 10 points or less.
