DENTON, Texas University of North Texas head football coach Todd Dodge announced that junior Daniel Meager will be the starting quarterback when the Mean Green opens the season at Oklahoma Sept. 1.
“Daniel has had an excellent spring and fall practice and has consistently progressed in our offense,” Dodge said. “We are very confident that he will do a tremendous job leading this team as we begin the 2007 season.”
Meager and true freshman Giovanni Vizza battled throughout the first two weeks of fall practice with both getting extensive repetitions with the first team offense. Meager has started 16 games at North Texas, including all 11 as a redshirt freshman in 2005 and five games last year. He has 1,458 career passing yards and eight touchdowns in two years with the Mean Green.
“Giovanni provided great competition during these two weeks and I’m sure that he has made Daniel a better quarterback,” Dodge said.
“I am excited about the opportunity to lead this offense as we get ready to start the season,” Meager said. “I know that the competition is not over and I still have to go out there and perform, but it is nice knowing that Coach Dodge has the confidence that I can go out there and get the job done.”
