Mean Green running back Patrick Cobbs, The nation’s leading rusher in 2003, topped the list of candidates for the Hossman Trophy Watch List, an award given annually to the country’s top football player.
Cobbs turned heads last season, rushing for 152.7 yards per game and 19 touchdowns, earning him Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year honors heading into this season and Offensive Player of the Year in 2003.
Patrick is joined on the watch list by 47 of the nation’s top players, including Southern California quarterback Matt Leinart, Oklahoma quarterback Jason White, and Texas running back Cedric Benson.
The Hossman Club of Columbus will release a list of 10 finalists for the award on October 25. Last year’s winner was wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald of Pittsburgh.
Cobbs is also on the watch list for the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Award, given to the nation’s top player, and the Doak Walker Award, given to the nation's top running back.
Other Mean Green players on award watch lists include defensive end Adrian Awasom (Rotary Lombardi, Bronko Nagurski), quarterback Scott Hall (Davey O’Brien) and center Andy Brewster (Rotary Lombardi).
Cobbs and the Mean Green take on the Texas Longhorns on Sept. 4 in Austin.
