Scrimmage Notebook: Running Game Impresses During Fall's Third Scrimmage
Multiple Backs Have Strong Showings Saturday
DENTON -- The Mean Green held their third scrimmage of fall camp at Apogee Stadium Saturday. As week three of camp came to a close, the running game had arguably its best showing in any of the scrimmages, as the offensive line consistently had a good push throughout the day.
Play of the Day: Redshirt senior Andrew Tucker (Tyler) had the highlight run of the day, breaking off a physical, 50-yard touchdown run. About nine yards into the run, Tucker lowered his shoulder and ran over a defender before hitting the afterburners on his way to the end zone.
Play of the Day (honorable mention): Sophomore wide receiver Keegan Brewer (Lake Dallas) caught a pass on a rollout from redshirt junior quarterback Quinn Shanbour (Oklahoma City) over the top and outran the secondary for a 96-yard score.
Catch of the Day: On third-and-eight, redshirt sophomore tight end Kelvin Smith (Spring, Texas) hauled in a very difficult catch over the middle on a strong throw from sophomore quarterback Mason Fine (Locust Grove, Oklahoma). Smith was able to come up with the big first down grab despite good coverage from his defender.
For the third straight week, four quarterbacks saw action in the scrimmage, though the majority of the reps went to Fine, who started the day, and Shanbour. Freshman Cade Pearson (Texarkana, Texas) and redshirt junior Devlin Isadore (Houston) also took snaps on the day.
Tucker had a strong day, bulling forward for a first down on fourth and short on the day's first possession. He was aided by a very strong push up front by the Mean Green offensive line. He finished with a pair of rushing scores on the day, the 50-yarder described above, and a nine-yard run later in the day.
Junior running back Anthony Wyche (Philadelphia) was another back who put up a solid day. On several occasions, Wyche was loose into the second level, both in the run and pass game.
Defensively, junior defensive back Kemon Hall (Calhoun City, Mississippi) had a nice pass break-up on the opening series.
On third-and-long, redshirt senior Andy Flusche (Muenster, Texas) picked up a sack to force fourth down and get the defense off the field.
Redshirt freshman wide receiver Jason Pirtle (Locust Grove, Oklahoma) made a pair of third-down catches over the middle of the field on the day.
Shanbour rolled out to the right and hit redshirt junior receiver O'Keeron Rutherford (Carthage, Texas) for a 24-yard touchdown, the first of the day for the offense.
Redshirt sophomore safety Taylor Robinson (Keller) picked up a tackle-for-loss on an outside run to the left to set the offense in a second-and-long situation.
With the offense starting backed up at its own one yard line, redshirt freshman Nic Smith (Arlington) had back-to-back runs of seven and eight yards, respectively, to create some breathing room.
Later in that drive, Smith took advantage of some great blocking, and patiently hit the hole to get into the open field. Smith ended up with a 32-yard pickup on the play. North Texas eventually drove down and senior kicker Trevor Moore (Edmond, Oklahoma) connected on a 39-yard field goal.
Later in the day, Smith had another big gainer, this time in the passing game. He pulled in a swing pass from Shanbour and picked up 46 yards, somewhat thanks to a spin move along the sideline.
Redshirt freshman linebacker Joe Ozougwu (Alief, Texas) burst into the backfield to force a safety, stuffing the running back behind the line of scrimmage.
Sophomore linebacker Hayden Doggett (Hutto, Texas) recorded the only interception of the day, collecting a batted ball inside the offense's own 20.
Freshman running back Evan Johnson (Loranger, Louisiana) scored on a seven-yard run during red zone drills.
Senior nickel Dee Baulkman (Bainbridge, Georgia) made a solid form tackle behind the line of scrimmage on a second down play, dragging the ball-carrier down for a loss of three.
Fine rolled out to the right and picked out a wide open Caleb Chumley (Longview, Texas) in the back of the end zone for a three-yard scoring strike.
In goal line drills, Shanbour scored on a short keeper, while freshman Tre Siggers (Duncanville) found the end zone on two occasions, both from inside two yards.
Shanbour concluded the day's action with a 45-yard touchdown pass to freshman Justin Cain (Dallas), who cut back across the middle of the field behind a block from sophomore receiver Michael Lawrence (Sweetwater, Texas).
