Wilson Named To Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List
Senior Running Back Is One Of 45 Players On Watch List
TYLER, Texas – North Texas senior running back Jeffery Wilson was named to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List as one of 45 players representing all 10 Football Bowl Subdivision conferences, the award committee announced Tuesday.
Wilson enters the 2017 season as the program’s 11th-ranked rusher, with 1,990 yards. He carried 169 times in 2016 for 936 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns. The Elkhart, Texas, native surpassed the 100-yard mark on three occasions and had multiple rushing touchdowns four times.
The award is presented annually to the nation’s outstanding Division I college offensive player who is either born in Texas, has graduated from a Texas high school or plays at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college. The player must also exhibit the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell, including integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, community, and tenacity. The award honors the legacy of Texas legend Earl Campbell and recognizes his home community of Tyler, Texas.
Earl Campbell graduated from John Tyler High School in Tyler before joining the Texas Longhorns under legendary Coach Darrell K. Royal. In his senior year, he led the nation with 1,744 yards rushing and 19 touchdowns, going on to win the Longhorns’ first Heisman Trophy.
He was subsequently drafted by the Houston Oilers where he won Rookie of the Year honors in 1978 and went on to lead the NFL in rushing three times. Campbell earned NFL MVP in 1979 and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1991. He now resides in Austin.
