Five Former Mean Green Players Make 2016 NFL Preseason Debuts
Cowboys LB Derek Akunne Helped Force A Turnover In Los Angeles On Saturday
DENTON -- As the first week of NFL preseason kicked off this past week, five of the six former Mean Green players on NFL rosters made their 2016 debuts. The other, Dallas Cowboys running back Lance Dunbar, continues on his road back to recovery following a knee injury he suffered back in Week 4 of last year.
Another member of the Cowboys, linebacker Derek Akunne, made a huge impact on Saturday night in a 28-24 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. In the second quarter, he delivered a crunching hit on No. 1 overall draft pick Jared Goff to force an errant throw that was picked off by fellow linebacker Mark Nzeocha.
Around the league, another pair of former North Texas linebackers, Craig Robertson (New Orleans Saints) and Zach Orr (Baltimore Ravens) had productive games in their respective preseason openers. Robertson led the Saints in tackles with six, two of which were solo in a 34-22 loss at New England. Orr posted four total tackles, two of which were solo and one that was a tackle for a loss in a 22-19 win over the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night.
Robertson's teammate in New Orleans, offensive lineman Cyril Lemon, also saw action Thursday against the Patriots, while Oakland Raiders fullback Jamize Olawale carried the ball three times for seven yards in a 31-10 win at Arizona.
MeanGreenSports.com will continue to follow the journeys of former Mean Green players in the NFL throughout the course of the preseason and regular season with updates every Monday.
