VIDEO: First Scimmage In The Books For North Texas
Defense Makes Big Plays, Byrd Shines
Aug. 10, 2013
The North Texas football team held its first scrimmage of the fall camp on Saturday morning at the Athletic Center practice fields. Both sides had big plays as the Mean Green defense was able to force turnovers throughout the day but the offense had their way during red-zone drills.
Cornerbacks Hilbert Jackson and James Jones each had an interception on the morning. Senior running back Brandin Byrd, who receives his degree today, had perhaps the most exciting plays of the scrimmage.
The first big run was just a few plays in when Byrd exploded for close to a 70-yard run. The second came during red-zone work. On a fourth-down and goal to go from the one-yard line, Byrd was stopped on the right edge around the five-yard line, but kept his feet moving and the play alive by reversing course and going all the way across the field until he scored on the left pylon for the TD.
North Texas continues fall camp practice in preparation for the season opener against the Idaho Vandals on August 31 at Apogee Stadium.
