Despite wet conditions to start, the first-annual North Texas Athletics Touchdown 5K Run was a tremendous success Saturday. Nearly 100 runners took place in the inaugural event, which was held at the site of the future Mean Green football stadium adjacent to the Athletics Center.
The 5K run was won by Craig Lutz in a time of 16:07 despite the adverse conditions. Former North Texas cross-country runners George Lutkenhaus (17:56) and Mark Miller (18:27) finished second and third respectively. The top woman finisher was Wanda Janolo in a time of 24:14. There was also a 1-mile Family Fun Run that took place following the 5K race.
Participants of the run were allowed to tour the Athletic Center and meet with Mean Green football coaches and players. The event was the unofficial start to the 2009 football season and was held immediately prior to the annual Kickoff Cookout.
