North Texas Student-Athletes Honored For Academic Success

NEW ORLEANS (8/3/06) - Over 100 North Texas student-athletes were recognized for academic excellence during the 2005-06 academic year, announced the Sun Belt Conference office.

The Sun Belt Conference released its Commissioner’s List and Academic Honor Roll for the 2005-06 season, and 133 Mean Green student-athletes were included for having achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better.

Among the 133 Mean Green honored, 50 student-athletes earned a spot on the Commissioner’s List by recording a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

North Texas student-athletes achieved unparalleled success in the classroom during the 2005-06 school year. Nick Bazaldua became only the third Mean Green student-athlete to earn a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, which was awarded to 29 male and 29 female athletes from across the country last year. Only four Division I football players and 11 Division I athletes overall were awarded the $7,500 scholarship.

Four student-athletes were honored for their academic achievements by ESPN The Magazine and the College Sports Information Directors of America. Patrick Cobbs (football) and Heath Smith (track and field) were both named second-team All-America, while Susan Waters (softball) and Austin Welch (golf) received academic all-district honors.

Nearly 1,300 student-athletes are being honored by the Sun Belt Conference for achieving a grade point average of 3.0 or better. Sun Belt schools combined to have more than 550 student-athletes land on the Commissioner's List, which honors all student-athletes recording a 3.5 GPA or better during the 2005-06 academic year. The league also had numerous standouts named to the Academic Honor Roll, which is awarded to those maintaining a 3.0-3.49 GPA.
