2008 Key Stat: 12 … Last season Knott connected on 12 of 17 field goal attempts, including a season-high 47 yarder against Tulsa. In fact, four of Knott’s field goals came from 40 yards or more. He also led the team with 58 points.
Why he will start: Not only was he pretty accurate (70 percent) on his field goal attempts, but Knott also showed during the spring game that he can boom kickoffs deep into the end zone. Anything that can help out a young defense with field position is an added plus.
Why he won’t start: He would have to struggle mightily in training camp not to be the starter against Ball State. He came over last season from NEO and was impressive from the get-go.
Overall: Knott has perhaps one of the strongest legs in the Sun Belt and makes the kicking area one position that Todd Dodge and company won’t have to worry about. North Texas is banking on winning a lot more games in 2009 and if the games comes down to the final minutes Knott is a guy they can trust.
