Signed: 2006 Alief Elsik High School
2008 Key Stat: 111 … The amount of tackles that Nwigwe racked up during the 12 game season last year. This number led the team and was 18 tackles more than the second place finisher. His 111 tackles was good enough for third in the Sun Belt Conference.
Why he will start: Coming off a career year in 2008, he has the starting middle linebacker spot locked up. He knows that he has to improve in some areas and will come to camp ready to step up his game to that next level.
Why he won’t start: The worst word in preseason football… injury. While he receives some pressure from other linebackers on the depth chart, none are ready to take on that middle role like Tobe is.
Overall: After a great 2008 season, Nwigwe looks to continue his rise to the top of the Sun Belt Conference on the defensive side of the ball. In addition to his 111 tackles, Tobe as recorded a team high 3 interceptions which he returned for a total of 98 yards and one score. If Nwigwe can build off his stellar year he promises to be at the top of the conference again this year in tackles. The defense is set to make huge strides this year and with Nwigwe as a leader, they’ll have someone to follow that knows how to get the job done.
