Signed: 2006 from Northeast Mississippi Junior College
2008 Key Stat: 928 … Montgomery led the Mean Green in rushing yards during his first season with the team. Playing in all 12 games, and starting 11 of them, he carried the load for North Texas out of the backfield.
Why he will start: With a year under his belt at North Texas, Montgomery has the job within his grasp. He needs to have a good fall camp, show that he has matured as a runner and pick up where he left of last season.
Why he won’t start: The already deep backfield steps up during fall practices and Montgomery regresses a little. He has two guys on his tail pushing him, and if they push too hard he could find himself out of the starting 11.
Overall: Montgomery was one of the bright spots last season and all indications are he is ready to continue that role. He has had the spring practices and summer workouts to become smarter as a runner and stronger. With his higher understanding of the offense and a new starting quarterback, he will have to be consistent early in the season to take pressure off of his freshman play caller. With his tough running style and playmaking ability, Montgomery hopes to have a career year leading the Mean Green to a successful season.
