Football Preview- Cornerback Royce Hill
Starting today and until the start of fall camp we are going to preview the North Texas two-deep roster and then some. It will be a random selection of players from the offense, defense, and the special teams. Up first is cornerback Royce Hill.
Signed: In 2007 from Cy Ridge High School
2008 Key Stat: 9. That’s the number of games that Hill started as a true freshman at cornerback. It was on the job training for Hill that started to show results as the year went on. He ended up the year with 34 tackles. Hill was a versatile player last year with a team-high 51 yards kickoff return and a 25.6 kick return average
Why he will start: Hill came off the bench in three games last year but has the expeience now having played in 12 games at the Division I level. The game has slowed down for Hill and he’s already got the coaches raving about his work ethic and mentality.
Why he won’t start: Injury.
Dont' forget: Hill is a fantastic athlete who at one point last year was returning both kick-offs and punts while playing cornerback. Versatility might be his best asset and he will be one of the primary punt and kick returns for North Texas.
Overall: If there was a player who came out of spring ball with more confidence you will be hard pressed to find him. Hill also received some accolades from Texas Football, being named to the All-Texas College Team Defense second-team all-defense squad at the cornerback position, one of just four sophomore’s to either the first or second team. He’s going into the season as the unquestioned starter at cornerback and maybe even taking the mantle of a lock-down guy before the season’s over. The improvement in Hill in under a 12-month span will be noticeable even to the most casual observer.
